Ramayan the TV serial just got a life of its own:

Sagar persisted and it broke all TV-viewing records. You will be shocked to know that Doordarshan saw no potential in a religious text-based TV serial and initially rejected it.

That is how he came to set up a TV serial making unit (Sagar Arts) with his sons as partners. It is said that a visit to France in the 70s and some time spent with a family there while watching TV made him realise that the TV box is going to beat cinema as a mode of entertainment soon. In 1950, he founded a film company and made several films. His screenplay for Raj Kapoor's hit film 'Barsaat' was the beginning of his rise. After Partition he reached Mumbai with little money in the pocket and horrible experiences during the passage from Pakistan to India. during the day and studied for his degree at night.Īfter a stint in journalism and poetry, he began his career as a clapper boy in a silent film 'Raiders of the Rail Road'. In his days of youth and struggle, he did seemingly menial jobs such as working as a peon, truck-cleaner, soap-vendor etc. As per certain olden days customs, he was adopted by his maternal grandmother who changed his name to Ramanand. Ramanand Sagar was an educated man who began small:įew know that the real name of Ramanand Sagar is Chandramauli Chopra and that he was born at Asal Guru Ke near Lahore on December 29, 1917. In 1976, Sagar took it to heart and launched work on Ramayan. He had also told him Ramanand Sagar tha he will be creating global spiritual consciousness through the medium of cinema. In 1942, a 25-year-old had been told by a Pandit who knew astrology that he will retell the Ramayan in an epic manner. He decided to act upon a Kashmiri ascetic named Nityanand's prediction about him, writes Ramanand Sagar's son Prem Sagar in his book "An Epic Life: Ramanand Sagar: From Barsaat to Ramayan". The Sanskrit verses of Ramayan were understood very well by him. Ramanand Sagar was a gold medalist in Sanskrit and Persian from the University of Punjab in 1942. With Rajiv Gandhi's ascendance to power, the STD/ISD and IT revolution was ushered in and television sets became coloured.Īlong came a filmmaker who had stupendous ideas about what best to do with these assets. The 1982 Asiad had popularised the will to own a TV set. Films, dramas, parodies etc had taken centre-stage and no one realised that the most interesting tale of them had not been made for a long viewing purpose at all. Due to whatever reasons, Indian children had missed out on a sustained narration of the country's most revered epic - Ramayana. Ramanand Sagar's television saga - the mega serial Ramayan - was an extravaganza that beamed the epic right into the drawing rooms of a captive audience in the late 1980s. His epic TV serial Ramayan broke all records of TV viewing. He did ultimately move towards making films and later, TV serials.I believe the series worked because it was born out of a complete faith in the source material. We all believed in the words and teachings of the Ramayan. So the impact of the Ramayan and the reverence it generated came from a place of complete sincerity. It was a voluntary and totally instinctive impulse. You know, back then being religious and devout was not a compulsion. “Wherever my father went, people touched his feet, treated him as someone who had brought God into their lives. Moti Sagar admits he and the family were taken aback by the impact of Ramayan. Arun Govil became Ram, Dipika became Sita, Arvind Trivedi was Ravan, and Dara Singhji was only Hanuman in the public’s mind for the rest of his life and even today so many years after his death.” We had the most dedicated team of technicians and actors.

We did nothing else except sleep for a few hours.

For two years, we lived and breathed only the Ramayan. My brothers Subhash, Prem and Anand were there too hands-on shooting at an abandoned studio in Umbergaon which we revived. We all moved with him to Umbergaon in Gujarat to shoot Ramayan and Umbergaon became our home for the next two years. Although he didn’t force any of us to join him to make Ramayan, all he said was he was making the Ramayan and those members of the family who wanted to join him were welcome to do so. So what was the family’s reaction to the announcement? “We always treated Papaji as the voice of authority. Actually, when he had fallen ill with tuberculosis, a face-reader had told him he would do something towards the end of his life that would change his destiny.” He said it is something he was born to do in life. Moti still remembers when the patriarch of the Sagar family gathered the family members to make the announcement.
